There are a lot of things that we do not know about road security. Definitely we believe that there is a lot of work to be done if we want to significantly lower the road fatalities that we are tragically having every year.

Very interesting new information and significant discoveries relevant to traffic accidents and safety were obtained, from the first large-scale instrumented-vehicle study undertaken with the primary purpose of collecting pre-crash and near-crash naturalistic driving data.

The 100-Car Study and its follow-on analysis were co-sponsored by NHTSA, the Virginia Transportation Research Council (the research division of the Virginia Department of Transportation) and Virginia Tech.

This research data add to our knowledge and do show that road traffic safety should be a priority for all governments. Long term strategic programs for educating people and improving road network should be implemented in order to prevent more tragic losses.   

Driver drowsiness was a contributing factor in 20 percent of all crashes and 16 percent of all near-crashes.
