Takis A. Haggiandreou, Director Progressive InsuranceDear Friends,

As the Christmas holidays approach, we cannot eliminate from our minds the potential hazards resulting from holiday traditions and festivities.

According to health statistics, during the holidays, the number of people being treated for injuries, food poisoning, falls, cuts, shocks related to decorations and Christmas trees increase significantly.

Candle and Christmas tree related fires, are causes of deaths, damage and property loss. It is not infrequent that holiday lights and decorations, do not meet safety standards.

It is not only trees, lights and decorations that need our attention in order to prevent holiday related accidents. Prior to buying or giving toys to children, they need a careful check from the parents in order to ensure appropriateness for their age. Let us not forget that small parts are a potential cause of choking in young children.

Fireplaces, gifts wrappings, bags, paper, ribbons and bows all have their obvious and hidden hazards. Food safety is primordial as food poisoning cases increase during holiday season.

Some preliminary thinking and precautions can be useful when children are having outdoor activities, when visiting or staying for some time to other houses and when are trusted to other people for guarding them for a night or longer time.

You will find more interesting points relevant to prevention of accidents in the article Christmas holiday safety tips included in our eleventh monthly newsletter.

Definitely the list of potential perils cannot be exhaustive. However it is up to us to develop a spontaneous way of thinking and acting swiftly in front of any new unexpected situation that could have obvious or hidden hazards menacing ourselves or our children.

By developing an approach towards safety and accident prevention, the chances that undesirable events do happen will be significantly reduced. This approach will be beneficial not only for Christmas holidays but as well for the rest of the year. Let us not forget that accidents of all sorts are the main reason of children mortality.

With these thoughts in mind, I believe that we maximize the chances of having wonderful festive days according to traditions without any sort of problems or tragedies.

I hope you will have a wonderful time with your family and friends and me as well as all my colleagues from Progressive Insurance Company we would like to wish you merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.
