All too often we see children who suffer terribly from burns requiring years of medical care. The physical scars can be bad, however, the emotional scars can be far worse and last a lifetime. Of course, we see parents who are devastated by the loss of a child, often blaming themselves for something that happened in a split second.

Dear Friends,

According to experts, the highest incidence of household injuries occur at party times and during times of increased family activity. Regardless of the holiday you're celebrating, it's in your children's best interest for you to be aware of risks and more importantly, of how to prevent accidents.

It is important to watch the kids during holiday times. Children are at high risk for injuries that can lead to death or disability, including those related to choking, playgrounds, and poisoning.

Keep a watchful eye on your kids when they’re eating and playing. Keep dangerous toys, foods, and household items out of the reach of children, including choking hazards like coins and hard candy. Learn how to provide early treatment for children who are choking.

You will find more information on this timely topic in the article Prevention of holiday burns, fires and injury that you will find attached with our 47th Progressive Newsletter.

Injuries from falls, fires, and fireworks often occur around the holidays. The majority of holiday-decorating falls are from ladders, roofs, furniture, stairs, and porches. Most residential fires occur during the winter months. Cooking is the primary cause of residential fires, and smoking is the leading cause of residential fire-related deaths. Fireworks-related injuries often occur on New Year’s Eve. Take steps to protect yourself from injuries.

Use ladders safely. Use step stools instead of furniture when hanging decorations. Keep candles away from doorsteps, walkways, landings, trees, and curtains. Place them on sturdy tables, keep them out of the reach of pets and small children, and never leave them unattended.

Install smoke alarms on every floor of your home, including the basement. Be sure to place smoke alarms near rooms where people sleep. Leave the fireworks to the professionals.

With these thoughts in mind for your safety, we wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Before lighting any fire, remove all greens, boughs, papers, and other decorations from fireplace area. Check to see that the flue is open. When setting up a tree at home, place it away from fireplaces, radiators or portable heaters. Place the tree out of the way of traffic and do not block doorways.
