On another subject and concerning our monthly newsletter, it is well established that while walking or driving, the use of cell phones for dialing, talking or texting increases significantly traffic and pedestrian accidents and fatalities. Statistics from the United States show that 28% of all accidents are caused by drivers talking or texting on mobile phones. Hands-free devices are not able to reduce accidents, damage and fatalities. The distraction generated to the driver by new technologies is not necessarily less and therefore the risk of accidents does not decrease but could increase. Distraction when drivers talk with or without a hands-free device is not only a cause of serious accidents. Recent research has accumulated evidence that this is as well hazardous for relationships. Cell phone conversations change the way drivers see the road and traffic situations. The use of cell phone by drivers for dialing, texting or talking makes them more likely to miss traffic signs and impairs them from realizing the hazards and seizing in time important information from their environment. But what about the quality of conversations on the mobile phone of the driver with family, friends, close relationships and business partners? Research has shown that under these circumstances, the risk of misunderstanding and damage to relationships is important. The distraction of the driver, the difficulties of multitasking and the variations of the quality of the mobile transmission related to technical issues, create preconditions for a less good, poor or bad interpersonal communication. Read more about hazards created by mobile phone use while driving in the article Drivers' distraction because of mobile phone talking is dangerous and as well hazardous to close relationships that you will find attached with our 95th Progressive Insurance Newsletter. We now know that cell phones are a danger on the road in more ways than one. The cell phone-fatality correlation should be an alarm for the society and legislators. With the explosion of cell phone use, it is obvious that novel methods or more aggressive measures are needed to reduce use of cell phone and other similar devices by drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.
