The Progressive
Insurance Newsletter February 2003 It is with with great pleasure that we are inaugurating our new service, "The Progressive Insurance Newsletter". We believe that improving the understanding of insurance and its role in society by continuously informing and educating all interested persons, will ultimately be beneficial for everybody. People have always sought ways to provide security for themselves, their families and their societies. Different methods have been used throughout history to share the burden of financial and physical loss. It was the Chinese that first, in 3000 B.C., discovered and employed the basic principle of insurance which demands to accept a small loss (what we call today a premium) in order to avoid a bigger, unknown loss (a major claim). Today the importance of insurance is probably higher than ever and covering almost all aspects of private or professional life. However there is a need for a better understanding by the broader public of the issues relevant to the various forms of insurances. We are including in our first newsletter an article about road safety and safer driving. The issue of road safety is of major importance. Each year road traffic accidents kill more than1,2 million people worldwide. The numbers are rising sharply and according to World Health Organization the total numbers are expected to double by 2020. We therefore believe that all relevant authorities as well as each person among us should take all precautions to avoid more human tragedies generated and happening in the roads. We thank you for your interest and support and we will welcome your comments and suggestions. Takis A. Haggiandreou |
