February 2008 Did you know that the current level of malnutrition among nearly half the world's population of 6.3 billion is unprecedented in human history? This alarming figure is becoming tragic if we take in consideration that there are 11 million childhood deaths worldwide each year. Most of these deaths are a consequence of malnutrition and are preventable: 8 million of the 11 million childhood deaths worldwide each year could easily be prevented. Malnutrition is weakening children to the effects of diseases that are otherwise preventable. Almost 60 percent of deaths of children under 5 in the developing world could be prevented. These important information is brought to us by researchers from Cornell University. We are additionally informed that the future is even more worrisome. In 50 years Earth's population could exceed 12 billion. When this happens there could be even less water and land, per capita, to grow food. In the next 50 years, the degree of malnutrition, resultant disease and human misery is unimaginable. Children especially in poor and underdeveloped countries, will pay the biggest toll. Malnutrition in the world is a scourge of unprecedented dimensions. The continuous deterioration of this situation, the projected increase of the human population on our planet, the increase of the number of people suffering from malnutrition, the decreased availability of food and water resources, are expected to threaten peace, security and freedom in the world. We present you more information on this interesting topic in the article Malnutrition in the world and children that you will find attached with our 61st Progressive Newsletter. There is an imperative necessity for strategies to fight the malnutrition problem in the world for now and for the future. Additionally it is necessary to make health care more equitable, preventing unnecessary children's death. The first step in preventing child death is to make sure that every child is well nourished, which is both scientifically and economically feasible.
