The Progressive Insurance
Newsletter January 2004 As we are entering the new year, I cannot avoid thinking about a sad reality: An unacceptable and ever increasing number of our fellow citizens will be tragically killed in our roads. Sadly our country has one of the highest figures of road related deaths and injuries in relation to our population in Europe. People of all ages will die this year from preventable crashes. But unfortunately children and young people pay the heaviest burden. There is a real public health epidemic of highway death in our small country. How can we avoid this? How can we prevent young people from dying or being permanently handicapped? The answer is not easy. The reasons for this disaster are many and complex. In order to change this, it is not the task of a single authority or measures to be applied. It is a matter of everybody. If we want to decrease the heavy price that we pay for our transportation it is time that a national consciousness and awareness about traffic crash prevention, should become part of our daily life. With these thoughts in mind, I believe that for this month's Progressive's Newsletter, it would be beneficial to examine one significant factor that is involved in road safety: Tire safety. Studies have shown that proper tire maintenance can contribute to a significant decrease of vehicle breakdowns and accidents. After all everything rides on it. Basic tire maintenance includes tire pressure controls, load limits, correct tire size, tire tread controls, tire balance, wheel alignment, tire rotation, tire inspection and careful driving. You will find more about tire safety in the article of our monthly newsletter Tire safety and car accidents prevention We should not accept traffic fatalities as "God's will". We have to develop a new way to think about injury prevention. Safety should be our first transportation priority.
