January 2006 Did you know that 1 in 3 drivers is at risk because of poor eyesight? Well, recent research has shown that a third of drivers in Great Britain (13 million people) could be braking the law and putting themselves and others in danger because of poor eyesight. These are the sad and alarming figures published in a report "The Road Ahead" by the Royal National Institute for the Blind. People are not having regular eye tests and their sight is going unchecked and uncorrected. They may be driving while not able to see road signs clearly anymore or may be wearing glasses for driving that are no longer suitable. Eyesight problems are not only specific to advanced age. It is not uncommon to go short-sighted during the early twenties, only shortly after obtaining the driving test. Eyesight often changes so gradually that we don't notice until something goes wrong and with driving we can't take that chance. You will find attached with our 36th monthly Progressive Newsletter the article Driving and your vision. We believe that in this way we contribute for safer driving and better eyesight awareness among drivers of all ages. It is always easy to think that a collision will be caused by someone else, but it is up to each and every driver to take responsibility for their own actions. If anyone is driving with poor eyesight which has not been corrected by glasses or contact lenses they are putting themselves and others in danger.
