When you drive and talk your attention is distracted. This is true when your conversation takes place over a mobile phone, hands free or not and when you talk to a passenger in your car. However you have to know that recent research shows that the quality of your conversation or discussion as well as your attention are hindered when you drive. This means that if you talk when you drive, the quality of both your driving and your talking are impaired. This conclusion has many important implications. In our daily routine we all try to do as much as possible. We use the time when we are driving to talk with others and try to solve sometimes very complex and sensitive issues. In such cases that usually happen every day, our attention span and mental resources are shared between the complex tasks of driving and talking and thinking about various issues, some of them extremely difficult. Unfortunately in this way we do both tasks bad. Multitasking in the modern world is widespread. Many are afraid that this is not a good thing. If we consider the lack of safety created during driving because of simultaneously doing other tasks, then we can understand by this simple example how dangerous sometimes multitasking can be. Read more about this original research in the article Beware of conversations when you drive: Driving impairs talking and understanding that you will find attached with our 84th Progressive Insurance Newsletter. We have to always keep in mind that talking impairs driving and that the reverse is also true. There are certainly dangers when our abilities as drivers are hindered by talking. It is as well dangerous when we talk about complex issues when we are driving because our thoughts and decisions might as well be hindered and the decisions we take or the consequences can be bad.
