Dear Friends,

The severe shortages of water supply and difficulties in managing water resources that we are experiencing now, constitute a strong reminder for everybody about the importance of preserving and protecting the water resources of our planet.

Water is more important than oil or any other mineral for our economy, civilization and survival. This is a most valuable resource used for sustaining life of all kinds, for growing food, generating power, providing transportation and contributing to recreation.

However what are we doing to protect and conserve our water resources  in order to meet present and future needs?

It is clear that we have been doing till now is not enough. The efforts must be local, national and international based on a global cooperation.

The European Union considers as high priorities the water protection and preservation issues and 'multidirectional' approach, not just passing laws, but also offering incentives for 'greener' behavior, and working in many different areas.

You will find more information on this timely topic in the article Protection of water quality that you will find attached with our 66th Progressive Newsletter.

Educating the people of all age groups and professions, and in particular the young ones, about issues relevant to water protection and safety, must be a continuous process which will secure a successful outcome to all policies and laws aiming at water and environment safety and preservation.

The total amount of water on earth does not change. Today there is as much water as thousands years ago. Planet Earth is covered by water at 75% of its surface. Some people suggested to call the planet "Water" rather than "Earth".
