It is now summer and during the hot summer days the question of an afternoon sleep is more timely than ever. It seems that afternoon sleep is a physiological need for the human body and in particular for the brain. Many historians quote that Winston Churchill said, "You must sleep some time between lunch and dinner, and no half-way measures. Take off your clothes and get into bed. Don't think you'll be doing less work because you sleep during the day. You will be able to accomplish more." Well, science today proves how correct Churchill was. More and more studies show that a nap during the day, preferably in the afternoon but without excluding any other time, is beneficial for the heart, lowers the risk for heart attack and high blood pressure, improves mood, fights away the stress and boosts memory, productivity and brain power. It is no coincidence that the famous quote about sleep being the bridge leading from despair to hope was once said and afterwards frequently cited. It is now well proven that a lack of sleep is a source of major problems for peoples health and the cause of accidents and some major catastrophes that happened during the last decades. The afternoon sleep is an occasion for our body to recuperate, rejuvenate and get ready for more productive actions. However afternoon sleep shouldn't be longer than 40 to 50 minutes. If longer it may interfere with the night sleep. Read more about the benefits we get from the afternoon sleep or other short nap during daytime in the article Afternoon sleep, brain power and productivity that you will find attached with our 90th Progressive Insurance Newsletter. The employers should take into consideration the fact that the afternoon sleep or other short naps during day time, have the potential to boost the brain power and therefore productivity. Taking into consideration this biological reality, measures should be taken to offer the possibility for short naps during working time and this could be beneficial to the companies and employees alike, in certain fields.
