Newsletter June 2003 Accidents are the leading cause of death in children in developed countries. Accidental injury and death can be caused from falls, motor vehicle accidents, drowning, poisoning, burns and fires, choking and firearms. Statistics show that the majority of deaths in children and adolescents are the result of home related accidents. Prevention of unintentional injuries at home is of paramount importance for the safety of children and adults alike. It is necessary to develop an attitude and an observation ability serving safety at home. You will find interesting and useful information in the article that we are including in our fifth newsletter, about Safety at home and children. Although it is very difficult to list all possible causes of potentials hazards, being aware of the most frequent dangers, can help to prevent most of the accidents. According to the National Safety Council of the United States, there were 29,500 deaths associated with the home in the year 2000. We like to say our home is our castle, however a significant number of hazards are present at home and need to be controlled. It should be our choice to take measures to control and minimize the chance of unfortunate events happening at home.
