Dear friends,

Did you know that in the United States of America a study found that 25% of drivers killed in fatal car accidents were under the influence of drugs?

Additionally, another study showed that 14% of the drivers randomly selected for control were found to have drugs in their organism.

The fact that the percentage of the drivers killed in fatal crashes was almost the double of the percentage of the drivers randomly selected who tested positive for various drugs, suggests that drugs contribute to fatal road traffic accidents.

The combined use of alcohol and drugs increases significantly the risk for traffic accidents with serious injuries and death. If you add to alcohol and drugs, inattention, tiredness and mobile phone use, the driver becomes extremely dangerous for himself and other road users.

It is very important to continuously inform and educate everybody and particularly the young people about the risks of drug use and driving. Additionally legislation concerning drug use and driving should become more specific and be enforced.

People should know as well that police can recognize drivers who are under the influence of drugs by watching their eyes. Many drugs increase the size of pupils. This helps the police to recognize drivers who use drugs.

Drugs and traffic safety is a subject of preoccupation in many countries. Taking drugs impairs driving skills. Driving under the influence of drugs is extremely dangerous and can affect driving in many ways.
