The Progressive Insurance
Newsletter March 2004 Many people are injured or killed by hazards at home or elsewhere each year. Many of the victims are children. The good news is that the majority of these accidents, can be prevented by using simple safety devices, by increasing our vigilance and by taking simple but basic precautions. Unfortunately, in many countries public efforts to prevent injuries have been insufficient. Many lives are lost because of impaired motor vehicle conditions, bad roads, lack of use of safety belts and motorcycle or bicycle helmets. Drinking and driving as well as speeding add new entries to the endless list of victims. It is necessary to intensify our efforts in research and development of effective methods for injury prevention and the resulting impairments, handicaps, deaths and economical burden. Injury prevention must cover human behavior, education, environmental changes, product design and legislative measures. Having these concerns in mind, we examined in the accompanying article of our 14th Progressive Newsletter, Prevention of deaths and injuries using safety devices , a number of recommendations about safety devices that can help to prevent unwanted events causing injuries in or around the home. You will find in this article, useful information about easy to install and inexpensive devices such as smoke detectors, bicycle helmets, ground-circuit-interrupters (GFCIs), fences around swimming pools, safety latches for kitchen, bathroom or workshop cabinets, anti-scald devices, safety gates, window guards, safety netting, outlet covers, cordless phones and others in order to maximize your chances for preventing injuries associated with hazards at home or elsewhere. I hope you will find useful information that will help you and your family. Together we can change this sad situation and hope that the number of victims of injury accidents will be much less tomorrow than today. Takis A. Haggiandreou |
