The Progressive
Insurance Newsletter May 2009
Did you know that tobacco is the only legal consumer product that kills when used exactly as the manufacturer intends? Well this is frightening but the data provided by the World Health Organization leave no doubt about it: Up to half of all smokers will die from a tobacco-related disease. Second-hand smoke harms everyone who is exposed to it. Many people around the world they are not sufficiently aware or they do not believe that smoking and any other form of tobacco exposure is bad for their health. Another significant percentage of people simply ignore the advices from experts and give no importance to warnings. However smokers harm not only themselves but as well people in their environment, their family and in particular their children. Additionally we should not forget the huge economic burden on society because of the huge costs paid for medical care generated by tobacco exposure. You will find more information about the World No Tobacco Day on 31 May 2009 and the fight against smoking and all uses of tobacco in the article Smoking prevention and World No Tobacco Day that you will find attached with our 76th Progressive Newsletter. The United Nations, the World Health Organization and the international society all over the world have joined forces since many years in a relentless effort to stop the scourge of smoking and prevent tobacco companies from advertising and promoting the deleterious use of tobacco by the masses and especially adolescents and young adults. Many diseases, disabilities, premature deaths and human suffering can be prevented by stopping active and passive smoking. Experience and epidemiological data show that the campaigns done for smoking prevention can save billions of euros in addition to saving lives. This year the theme of World No Tobacco Day is "Tobacco Health Warnings". The picture warnings on cigarette packets have been shown to be particularly effective at making people aware of the health risks of tobacco use and convincing them to quit. Everybody should work to get the the message across. A joint global effort can make the world a better, healthier and safer place without tobacco smoke. It is up to each person to act now so that collectively we can achieve this aim.
