Being at a higher professional position and having a place among the top in your work environment certainly has many positive effects. Usually the work is more interesting and challenging, freedom of movement is greater and the decision making process although difficult is gratifying. Additional benefits of higher positions include higher income, better working conditions and other perks. Under these circumstances it would be normal to expect better health status for directors and other top executives in various sorts of companies and institutions. However this is not always the case. A number of studies showed that indeed positions with power at work are associated with better health status. Others do not show the expected. Research has shown that power at work may have important drawbacks. The mental and physical health of the persons in managerial position may suffer because of work related issues. Higher positions and more responsibilities mean more problems, more stress and anxiety. Not everybody in the top power positions or even other managerial places has been adequately prepared to manage the intense stress that accompany many complex and difficult situations. Stress can be destructive for the body if it is left to evolve without control. On the contrary good stress management can be fruitful. It is very important that we all give the due importance to the stress and anxiety that professional in top positions experience. Their quality of life and overall health suffers. Ultimately this adverse situation may affect negatively their quality of work and the results may be sometimes bad for everybody and the society in general. Persons occupying managerial posts, higher hierarchical positions, who have power and decision making authority not only should be adequately prepared for the challenges of their responsibilities but additionally should be carefully supported by expert psychologists or other experienced advisors. This is important in order to help them protect their physical and mental health.
