The Progressive Insurance
Newsletter October 2003 During the last few decades, developing and enforcing workplace safety and health regulations has been a priority for many national relevant authorities. These efforts have been fruitful and a decrease in work related accidents, employees injuries and deaths has been achieved. Undoubtedly this is a positive evolution resulting in better workplace safety and health for the employees but at the same time less expenses and increased profitability and competitiveness for the companies. However a recent web-based survey conducted by the National Safety Council showed that 60% of employers recognize the high cost related to the off the-job-injuries. Most of the companies do not track these injuries or costs and this is an issue affecting their profitability which is being ignored. This economic burden could be prevented by a set of practical guidelines for injury surveillance and prevention programs for the-off-job injuries. You will find more about this interesting issue in the article included in our ninth monthly newsletter, Workplace safety and off-the-job injuries All employers are required to have in force an insurance cover for their legal liability for an accident or occupational disease that their employees may suffer in the course of their employment. To help prevent exposure to workplace safety and health hazards the actions and conduct of employers, should be assisted and guided by the relevant national authorities. Awareness of the importance and impact of the-off-job injuries should lead governments to assist companies in this field as well. This could successfully improve employees safety and health and give a boost to the economy by minimizing loss of productivity, maximizing efficiency and at the same time decrease health care related expenses.
