Pain is a common experience, everyone has experienced it at sometime in their lives; it is usually self limiting and improves. For some pain will persist and most of us will experience chronic pain (lasting longer than 12 weeks) in our lifetime.

 It is estimated that it costs society in excess of £12 billion a year with people taking time off work because of back pain. Around 80% of these costs, were not associated with healthcare but due to lost work production and associated wage replacement benefits.

Back pain is one of the most frequent causes of absence from work. It is not an easy problem to diagnose and treat. It is estimated that 25% of the population suffers from back pain at any one time.

The economic consequences of back pain are huge. The losses are not only for the patients who need money for diagnosis and care.

The losses are increasingly important for the companies and organizations who employ them. The loss of productivity and earnings is enhanced by the fact that one in four people who are diagnosed with back pain will experience a recurrence within one year.

Managing this difficult situation is a complex issue. It is important to address correctly this condition for the physical and psychical well being of the sufferers. Additionally a successful management of back pain will be fruitful for the society and the enterprises.

Our daily way of life and working habits have a fundamental influence on the health of our neck and the rest of our back. The way we sit at our office, work with our computer, lift weights and sleep, inevitably have repercussions on our body.

It is important for companies and other employers to step up their efforts for preventing back pain at work. Educating their employees about this complex issue and the physical and psychological aspects of chronic pain could be extremely useful for everybody.

The employees should be encouraged to take active measures for back pain prevention. Educational sessions about back pain and its prevention should be provided at their working places. Additionally relaxation techniques, cognitive coping strategies and psychological support have been found to lessen significantly the suffering of the employees and the overall losses of the companies.
