Temperature increase could trigger serious consequences for humanity and other life forms alike. A rise in sea levels could flood coastal areas and small islands. Additionally a greater frequency and severity of extreme weather events could be induced.

Takis A. Haggiandreou, Director Progressive InsuranceDear Friends,

As I write this letter, like you I am concerned about the impact from the natural disasters that we are currently watch happening in the United States, Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, the Eastern Pacific and other countries.

It is therefore with a degree of trepidation that I try to draw your attention to the effects of the climate change on people.

A Flash Eurobarometer Survey done at the request of European Commission's Environment DG, during which 7,500 people were consulted on the most important factor contributing to their quality of life – the answer surprisingly wasn’t what you might have expected.

In fact the highest concern was - about changes in climate, accumulation of all types of waste, deterioration of wildlife and the impact of the environmental changes on health.

Attached is a link to the article Devastating effects of climate change on people  included in our 20th monthly Progressive Newsletter, which among others includes information from the Flash Eurobarometer Survey.

I cannot help wondering whether there is a connection between the recent severe weather events and global warming.  Some are suggesting the 2004 hurricane season is unprecedented.

When an extreme weather event occurs, it is not unusual for people to ask if it is the result of global warming.  Because of the link between higher ocean temperatures and hurricanes, there is speculation that hurricanes will increase in frequency or intensity in a warmer world, with higher wind speeds and greater precipitation.

We have certainly seen global temperature increases and changes in precipitation patterns over the 20th century, resulting from human activities. This has resulted in some increases in extremes of temperature and precipitation.  These trends will continue in the future, and there is concern that global warming will cause climate variability and extreme events (e.g., floods, droughts, heat waves) to increase.

What is the major culprit for climate change? Human activity generating increasing levels of greenhouse gas emissions in atmosphere. These emissions do not stop on frontiers and therefore this is a global problem.
