September 2005 Did you know that more than 2 million people die each year worldwide because of work related accidents and occupational diseases? Well, this is exactly what says a new report published on 18.9.2005 by the United Nations. Although the number of work related diseases and deaths is on the decrease in the Western and other industrialized countries, in Asia the number of fatal accidents is increasing. Intense growth and competition as well as globalization, increase the strain on companies and therefore on the workforce. The thread of work related accidents caused by tiredness is actually concerning everybody. Serious accidents, causing huge scale negative repercussions to mankind and the environment, such as the Chernobyl and the Three Mile Island, show that prevention should be a continuous effort. Additional to the collective risk, let us not forget that research has shown that doctors, nurses, pilots and drivers among other professionals, are more prone to errors causing loss of life and serious injuries when tired and or sleep deprived.
