Dear Friends,

Natural disasters, including floods, hurricanes, coastal erosion, wildfires, and earthquakes, cause huge direct costs to the government, the insurance industry, and victims, and these costs continue to escalate.

The nightmare that Greece experienced last month is a dreadful reminder about what the climate changes and the inconsiderate human development can bring.

Human health will deteriorate because of climate change. Global warming will create a favorable climate for disease-causing organisms and food-plant pests -- but a much more challenging planet for humans struggling to survive. Millions could succumb to disease in an increasingly unhealthy environment, according to warnings from scientists.

The evidence of significant global climate change is continuously on the rise and global warming will only make matters worse including malnourishment, a net loss of available food, water shortages, infectious diseases spread and more air pollutants spread affecting the health and well being of billions of people.

International cooperation for crisis managements is most needed as it was shown in the fires that devasted Greece during the summer. The European Union, its members states, the International Charter on Space and Major Disasters, the European Space Agency and other national or international agencies, have cooperated during the wildland-urban fire crisis in Greece.

You will find more information on this interesting topic in the article Fire proofing homes, forest fire, spread of wildfires and global warming that you will find attached with our 56th Progressive Newsletter.

New global warming studies, predict that many current climate zones will vanish entirely by the year 2100, replaced by climates unknown in today's world. Are we ready to accept and manage such situations? As world leaders and scientists push to develop sound strategies to understand and cope with global changes and natural disasters, we have to realize both the importance and difficulty of such a task and everybody should contribute as much as possible.
