Dear friends,

Cell phone use creates many dangers for drivers, pedestrians and other users of the road. More aggressive policies are needed in order to reduce the number of fatalities.

There are important messages given to us by researchers who studied the long-term results of the use of mobile phones by drivers and pedestrians with or without hand free devices.

Talking or texting on the phone and listening to music while walking or crossing the street are distracting activities. The dangers are many and often life threatening.

Using the road as a driver of a car or of any other vehicle and as a pedestrian is a very complex activity. The brain has to constantly process an important quantity of information.

The solution to this safety problem is not easy. The number of distracted drivers and distracted pedestrians is growing and measures have to be taken.

Research has shown that some form of driver distraction is a contributing factor in 20 to 30 percent of all crashes. Cell phone use is a major cause of a driver's distraction.

A driver's first responsibility is to pay attention to the road. The issue of driver distraction caused by cellular phones becomes increasingly important as cell phone use becomes more prevalent in many countries.

The important take away message is that we should unplug from mobile devices whenever we are using the roads, in any way. It is for our good and for everybody else's as well.
